Prologue

You must be a curious reader. That is one among the several reasons you have started reading this book.  This book is meant for a wide spectrum of readers touched by Information Technology (IT) –IT professionals who create, maintain and test IT systems or lead and support IT organizations, customers and sponsors of IT projects, IT users who consume or use IT systems, IT enthusiasts who love and support IT.  May be you are a seasoned IT professional or a budding engineer or an assertive customer or a painstaking project sponsor or an ambitious entrepreneur or an enabler of an IT organization or an IT enthusiast.  This book is for you and everyone connected with IT.

Before telling what this book is, let me start with asserting what this book is not.  This book is not a textbook.  Textbooks and reference books are important. No question about that but I decided to give this book, a different touch. I decided to give it a different treatment.  I wanted to write a book that suits the needs of busy readers like you.

This book is a collection of nuggets under different categories. This book brings to you a collection of experiential thoughts and interesting stories.  It includes narratives on fine issues and conflicting opinions that are unique. This is a shortlisted collection of what I gathered in my two decades’ professional life collaborating with a significant number of professionals and experts. I believe, some pages of this book will reflect your experience and thoughts too. I strongly believe in experience sharing. It matters a lot in this digital economy.

Why this book? This book is for you to read, reflect and cherish. This book is to trigger your thoughts, incite your lateral thinking, and stimulate learning.  You can read this book depending on your style of reading and the structure of your schedule.  Lack of time can never be a constraint here.  All you need is a ten-minute slot per day to read the pages and make progress. Alternatively, you can pull it through in a day or two and decide to re-read it in bits and pieces at a later stage.

It was about porting the whole system from dBase II to dBase IV.    Starting mid-80’s until mid-90’s dBase was a very popular database management system.
